Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas my favorite family and friends!

This email will be my last before Christmas.  My next day off will be Christmas day! On Tuesday, I will have the chance to talk to my family and I am super excited! We have been invited to homes for dinner on the 23rd, 24th and 25th.  How great is that?

This week was way cool!! Sounds like everyone is getting set and ready for Christmas! I am so excited to hear how y'all are doing!  This picture is for Mom.  Still got my Santa picture this year!

This week was full of blessings. I'll start with the first one. ESTEFANY WAS BAPTIZED!! Oh my gosh I was so excited. She showed up super early because she was so excited. Wilson baptized her, and I got to confirm her in church the next day. She is from Ecuador. Exactly a year ago from her baptismal date, her husband got shot in Ecuador. That day her life changed in a horrible way. She then moved to the States, got to know Wilson, and eventually the church. She decided she wanted to get baptized on Friday. The reason she specifically wanted to be baptized on that day is because on Dec 14 her life changed for the worst. However, she wanted to change that day to be one of her best. She came up out of the water crying. She is an amazing example for all of us.

One thing that happened that y'all could think of as funny, but I thought was kind of messed up.  So we got a call from a lady to say that she needed help putting up lights.  So we show up, and there is this kind of crazy Colombian lady that dressed like she was 20 but was actually like in her 60s that kept calling us "papi" and "amores" and turned out she actually needed us to move ALL OF HER STUFF. No clue how she got all the stuff in there.  Then at the end she tried to give me a kiss.  Evaded that one pretty nicely, not going to lie. haha.

Here’s how they are “Lighting the World” in South Houston!

My new Christmas slippers.  What do ya think?

We went to the Rockets Center last week.  It was so cool.

Just remember the reason for the season!! READ ABOUT JESUS'S BIRTH!! I am so excited for this amazing city, and am so excited to have a chance to talk to you all so soon!!

Have an incredible week!!

Ankles, Gangs and CARS!

Buenas tardes familia y amigos!

Sounds like everyone is getting ready to go for Christmas! I am super excited to get some emails (and Christmas cards - address is below)  from y'all.  😉  Thank you so much for the emails for this week. I heard that the Christmas Choir was on Sunday! What a huge blessing! I loved participating in that back home. Even though I will never be musically blessed, the Spirit has always been so strong in that program. Hope you all loved it! Also, I forgot to give a HUGE shoutout last week to CHOKA!!! His birthday was last week, and I totally spaced it.  HAPPY late BIRTHDAY!!!

Christmas is getting popping around here in Houston. The Hispanics LOVE lights, which makes it easy to choose what door to knock at night. It is awesome, they are all decked out and we are too!  The tree is up! ( Thanks, Mom! )  We have 5 invitations to dinner on Christmas Eve so far!  The people here are so kind.

We have had a few pretty cool experiences this week. Lots of blessings, and let me tell you, the king of all tender mercies for me.

So a month ago we ran into a man, his name was Carlos.  He was just divorced and moved to Houston, and wanted to ask where the nearest church is.  We lost all contact for a month until last Tuesday. This guy told us that he needed to meet with us, so we set an appointment. He then told us to pray for him because he was sleeping in his car with only 10 dollars. At that moment we became a little nervous, because we thought that he was going to try to come back just for money. But then we had a lesson and taught about repentance and Jesus Christ, and he started crying so hard. Just saying that he wanted to change his life. So, he decided to come to church, and not only church, but a baptismal service we had after. He was awesome, and told us if we needed anything, call him, ride, food, anything. It was awesome! Taught me a great lesson about judging someone and their situation without knowing. Just a great blessing.

We also had a huge blessing on meeting with Elder Handy's 2nd cousin again. He said that he wants to change so much.  It was just so cool to see his desires to come unto Christ.  It is an incredible family that he has, it is just such a beautiful sight to see.  That was something so amazing!!

Ok, on to some other things.  So Elder Handy twisted his ankle bad playing soccer.  It was the size of a baseball.  So, we called Sister Anderson, the mission nurse, and she said that we needed a car, soooo for a little while, WE HAVE A CAR!!!  I am super pumped.
Here I am “Lighting the Companionship” by getting some ice for Handy’s ankle.

Also, I can now say that there is a gang here in Houston.  We saw some gang affiliated spray paint, so apparently MS13 is here in Houston.  So that was interesting haha.

Sadly the baseball camp at Minute Maid Park got rained out, so we did not do it, so we had to reschedule January.   The rain doesn’t stop us though.  Rain or shine, day or night, we are out!

Hope everything is going well!!  Just keep remembering to read your scriptures, say your prayers, and go to church.  Jesus is the reason for the season.  He loves us all so much, please share his light.

Hope you all have a great week!!

Presidents, Transfers and RAIDS!

Buenas tardes familia y amigos!

(I love you all!  I hope that you’ve had an incredible week! It’s so great that we are getting ready for Christmas.  I know that right now is the time to Light the World and I hope that we have time to lend service especially at this time when we can feel the Lord’s light so brightly. During this time I invite you all to look for opportunities to serve, like He served. I’m really excited for this Christmas!)

Sounds like it was an AWESOME week. I forgot to give a shout out to my main man Luke Berryhill last week for turning 8, and getting ready to be baptized!!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUDDY!! Sounds like things are starting to pick up and get going for Christmas!!! So excited to hear all that awesome stuff that usually goes on at Christmas time. I have zero doubt that my mom has all the Christmas lights up and everything is decorated, SIN NINGUNA DUDA!! I'm sure it looks so awesome! Also hearing that Benny is taking the ACT, oh boy those things are super fun...

Houston here is heating up, in more ways than one. First off, today is transfer day, and I am, once again, staying here! This will be my 4th transfer here, making it tied for a record of the longest stay in a bike area. Setting records here!!! I get to stay here with Elder Handy one more transfer, and we are pumped because we have some great things on the horizon. President called us individually and set us to a super high standard with respect to the mission goals already this transfer. He said that he expected to bring in 50 new contacts this transfer. Challenge.. Accepted. Bring it on!

Here we are heading to lunch.

Things are also heating up literally speaking. Like this last week got up to 70...and was raining...in December. Houston weather is crazy haha. Here is a picture of the beautiful Houston Skyline.  I LOVE the hills and mountains here.  😂🤔 But for real, this is where we work.

So apparently we heard we walked by these apartments right after it was raided for drugs. The doors were wrecked.

Also this last week apparently President Bush Sr. passed away, and they are burying him here in Houston. Actually, right across the street from our church building. haha. So the place has been decked out with cops and secret service EVERYWHERE. Especially today, more than any other day. We heard somewhere that President Trump and President Obama are here, and I would assume President Bush Jr. as well. So yeah, that's pretty crazy.

This last week for us was pretty awesome, and pretty sad at the same time. Sad because we had to say good y to Elder Tuia. He is heading back home to Stockton and Samoa. He actually knew Stone Godi in the MTC, he was his Zone Leader, so that was cool. But he has officially ended his mission. Bummer to see him go, but he was awesome!

We found 5 this week, which was pretty awesome. The coolest part isn't that we found 5, but how they were found. We received a referral one day to go visit this lady named Meylin, but sure enough she wasn't there, but then I got the strongest prompting to knock the neighbors door. As soon as we did, this cool lady named Yuraima from Cuba let us right in, we taught her! Then the next night, we were walking around one night at 8 o'clock, feeling a little bummed because all our lessons fell through. As we came up on this apartment with lights, I got this thought to go knock. I said to myself, "Na it's late, no one opens this late, we'd just annoy them and if anything they'd NEVER want us back". I took two steps past the house and had the thought return to my mind "GO BACK". So I did, we knock, they let us in, and thus began an awesome lesson with the Perez family! The spirit is so real, and I am so grateful to have him as my companion. We are always in a trio with him!

This past Sunday was awesome as well. We had 5 investigators there. Usually we can pull out 2 or 3, but yesterday we had 5! One lady named Marisol from Mexico,  FINALLY CAME after teaching her for a month!! We were so excited! Like amazingly excited. Another awesome lady named Carol from Guatemala got her work schedule switched so she can come to church! Miguel, someone who we have had at FHE's for some time, decided to come, he has 3 awesome daughters all in middle school and high school. And finally, Patricia and Estefany who have their baptismal dates were there as well! It was so great!

The real Superman!

President said we need to start figuring out a time to call on Christmas! We can do a video call so that'll be awesome! He said to do it in the morning. He switched our P-day to Christmas day, sooo there's a lot more flexibility! I'm super pumped to talk to you all!

Spiritual thought: The Holy Ghost will show us the way, he will lead and guide us, IF WE ARE LOOKING. (see Galatians 5:22-25)  I am so grateful for that gift and know that without it, I would be lost. But, if you can't tell if it's the Spirit or your own thoughts, Elder Rasband told us that 9 out of 10 times if it is influencing you for good, then it is of the Spirit, and God is trying to help you out and grow.

I love you very much and you are always in my prayers! I hope that you have an incredible week filled with the spirit of Christmas!

El Gato, Thaksgiving and KIKKOOOOOO

Buenas tardes familia y amigos, los amo bastante, y siempre estan en mis oraciones. Espero que tuvieran una semana maravillosa!
(Hi Family and Friends, I love you all so much and and you are always in my prayers.  I hope you had a marvelous week!)

I heard that Thanksgiving was AWESOME! I am so glad that you all had a killer time in San Diego!  Sounds like the Del was a blast, and I have seen some awesome pictures.  Seems like you all are having a great time this holiday season.  I know that Mom has got the Christmas lights up right now.  I hope you all are getting ready to light the world!!

We were working on Chevy Chase Drive. Shoutout to Dad and the Three Amigos!

I got an awesome surprise on Saturday night from home with some Sicily's pizza, wings, mozzarella sticks, and cake, so that was awesome!

We have seen some pretty cool miracles here this week.  I don't know if I told y'all, but we started teaching Elder Handy's mom's cousin who lives really close to us.  We have taught him a little bit about God's love for him and the atonement of Jesus Christ. We went to the church to go play soccer, because he loves the sport.  After we finished we went into the chapel with Victor, to show him around.  As we sat down, he started to open up to us, telling us that he has made some mistakes in his life, and he feels like this really is a second chance for him.  He said he knew the missionaries back in El Salvador, but now he feels like it is another chance.

This is Edith’s little daughter.  She is great.

Then, we also had a little rough day on Friday.  All of our lessons fell through.  So we decided to go take a dinner break, which we usually never do because we are usually loaded with lessons.  But we did, and headed to our favorite truck, El Gato.  I got a bomb gordita, and Handy got a machete that was amazing . But as we go, we run into an investigator that we havent had much contact with. We set an appointment, it was so great!!  That was such a miracle.

Does “Chang’s Chinese Restaurant" ring a bell for anyone?  It reminded me of the Seinfeld episode at the Chinese restaurant - “Seinfeld party of 4?"!  ha!

We had a great Thanksgiving at obsipo's (bishop’s) house, with Kiko (I’ve told you his story before - just amazing),  and apparently he put it on Facebook.  It was awesome!!

Kiko.

Also... the McFaddens dropped off a letter for us, AND DIDNT KNOCK THE DOOR!! We were doing personal study, and open the door, and there it was!! They are the best, so lucky to have the best friends.  One of my best buds Elder McFadden, serving his mission in Taiwan, has the best family EVER!! They are awesome!

Spiritual thought, 2 Nephi 32:1-2   Go be an angel in someone else's life.  Go lift someone else.  Christ is the reason for the season!!  Illumina el mundo!!! Hoy es el dia para empezar haciendolo!! (Light the World!  Now is the time to start doing it!)

Tengan una semana increible, y recuerden!! Jesus es el razon!!
(Have an incredible week and remember!! Jesus is the reason!!)

Robbed, called the Devil and TEMPLE TRIP!

Buenas tardes mis queridos amigos y familia!

Sounds like you all had a great week capped by my now teenage sister's birthday on the 15th, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRACIE!! Hope you got my letter!  Also a shout out to one of the best uncles to walk the planet who had his birthday last week as well, happy birthday Chris!!  Sounds like the fires are pretty bad back home, and I just want to let you all know that there are prayers heading your way from not only from me, but a lot of Texas! So sorry, and hope it stops soon. Stay safe!

As the title implies, it was definitely a week of highs and lows! haha We started of on a high note.  We had the opportunity to bring Edith to the temple!! It was such a miracle to see her taking steps to continuously try to make her life better.  The blessings of the temple are real.  I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to be there with her.

If you’ve never seen a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple, then check one out!!! They are all beautiful and all over the world!

Ok, on to some interesting, fun things.  So we were tracting through a neighborhood, and some guy invited us in to talk with him.  We offered service, but got nothing.  He went on to tell us how we were all going to hell, and called me the devil (and all kinds of other terrible things), and swore that if we came back in this area, he would send his posse after us.  So Elder Handy and I kind of walked away laughing, and then after an hour of tracting, we come back to the bikes, and there were 5 guys outside of his house, and they saw us, and we ducked into a laundromat.  We stayed in there for 5 minutes, and we walked out and they were all gone, looking for us.  Soooo, that was a little freaky, but we got out unscathed.

On to the other fun part of my week.

Last night, we stopped to give someone a blessing and were gone for about  20 minutes.  We were going to go with Elders Tuia and Hale, and as we got back to the car, we saw that our window was all busted.  My backpack was taken.  Mi mochila ya se fue con mis escrituras caras.  I was so bummed, my really nice Spanish scriptures were gone with all my notes, and all my notes and things I’d studied from the begining of the time here in Texas. So that stunk.  Lesson learned.  My new hope is that the guy that stole my things finds Jesus, and gets baptized because he’s so inspired by my notes.

The police rolled up and asked us if we knew how dangerous this area is. We said no, and they said that it is the 2nd most dangerous area in the greater Houston area.  So woohoo, lets go!!  I don’t think we will be avoiding the area anytime soon because that is where all the people live that we teach.

Here are some of the Spanish missionaries at a Thanksgiving party.

How about a 24 hour Jesus hotline on your front door??  Ha!

I love you all so much, just want to challenge you all to use the enabling power of Jesus. He will strengthen us, if we ask.  He will pull us through difficult times.

I love you all, have a great week!!

Painting the house black and gold!!

Holaaaa Familiaaaa y Amigos,

How are you all doing this week.  Soooo, last week I got an AMAZING video from my best bud and also brother and HE IS NOW A COMMITTED VANDY BOY!!!  I am so pumped to hear that and to have the blessing to hear the house is being painted black and gold.  ANCHOR DOWN!

Also thank you all so much again for all the emails and videos this last week!! I am so grateful for all of you and the love that I have felt on my mission!!  You all are the best!

Our week started with a happy birthday to this cool guy named Michael.

This week was a pretty interesting one! The first part wasn’t so great because I got sick.  I lost my voice for 3 days, and I couldn't really talk very well.  Riding a bike every day in the freezing cold weather isn’t so great for a bad cold. So that part was sad. However we saw a lot of blessings!

We had 6 PEOPLE AT CHURCH!! That was such a blessing! Also, Patricia and Estefany came back from Panama, and they loved their trip, and were right back at church.  They are such amazing people!!

The guy in the middle of this picture is named Kiko.  He’s awesome and we love him!  He is always willing to serve with us when we have assignments to go work. He has an amazing story to tell.  I’ll give you the quick version.   He was in a gang for a long, long time, met the missionaries and decided to change his life around.  Now he is an incredibly generous, selfless person that I’m fortunate to call my friend.

To give you an idea of what part of town we live in, here’s a view of our mailboxes.  haha

And I can’t send an email and not mention something about food.  Mod’s pizza is so good.

Just a few hours ago, we went to go give a blessing to Hermana Yolanda Rivera, this really sweet older lady in our ward.  She is heading to Mexico tomorrow and is coming back soon after but was incredibly sick.  Like could barely talk. Then we went and gave her a blessing, and it was amazing, it seemed like a few minutes after, she popped up, started walking, and her energy returned.  The power of the priesthood is so real!!  I love the power of the priesthood, and the blessing that we have to have the power of God on earth.

I love you all, and hope you have a great week!! Thanks for being amazing!!

19, Referrals and BLESSINGS!!

Buenaaaaas diaaaaas!! Como estamos hoy familia y amigos!!

I am in total shock.  I loved all of the birthday videos and messages.  Thank you so much. I still can’t believe it all. It was the coolest surprise. I feel so blessed to have the best friends, amazing support and the greatest family ever.  I never realized how many people outside of the family actually cared.  I felt so much love and teared up over and over as each video came through.  Thank you for the time you took to make and send them.  I am so grateful for the huge influence you all have been in my life.  I really do appreciate and care for each one of you.  And thanks, Mom, for putting it all together.  I feel so incredibly blessed.

I do have to say that the greatest gift I received today was a video from Ben telling me that he committed to Vanderbilt.  I am so excited it's crazy!  When I saw his video telling me about it,  I lost it.  I dropped the phone, ran out of the room and was screaming and then cried.  Best gift.  I’m so happy for Ben.

This week was a pretty great week.  It felt like the work was slow, but we still had a ton of success.  I feel like we are naturally just so blessed, sometimes I feel like every door we knock should open up and let us in, but that didn't happen this week, BUT we had a huge blessing in receiving a lot of help.  We had received a lot of referrals and have had the chance to teach amazing people like Karla, who’s step-mother was a member, but passed away.  We have been teaching her and it has been awesome.  Just last Thursday we extended a baptismal date, and SHE ACCEPTED!! Super excited!!

I like this truck!  This is the goal one day . . .   hahah

Flooded again!!

We also went to go teach Marisol, who was a referral from Hermana Susana! Hna Susana is being a killer missionary right now, and Marisol, who is single and living with her daughter and her husband, immediately accepted a baptismal date as well.  That was amazing too!

We went out for sushi for my birthday.  Thanks, Dad!

I had to take this picture.  The guy behind me totally reminded me of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite. haha

This is Daisy, making pupusas to sell.

Here we are at dinner with the familia Arellano.

We are doing well as a district, we are kind of carrying our zone which is awesome.  We are all like best friends, and it is a super fun district with lots of success so far!  We are just trying to keep it going.  Blessing beyond belief!!

Spiritual thought: 3 Nefi 15:9.  Read this.  It tells us to look to the light, to endure, and to live.  Christ is the light and life of the world.  Look to him, endure as a disciple of Christ, and LIVE.  THis is the best way to live!! The peace you feel in your life, the comfort that is always there, it is so there, it is almost palpable. Love the Lord, and follow him.  Do as he did!

Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes!! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!  HAVE A GREAT WEEK! LOOK AND LIVE!!

Ecuador, Halloween and Floods (and chased by a pack of kids!)

Holaaaaa familia y amigos!!!!

How is everyone this week!! I am so happy to see that you are having a good time coming up on Halloween!! Looks like Ben and Dad are having an awesome time up in Canada going on the big hunt.  So, so happy to hear that Gracie and Brik had so much fun at the trunk or treat.  Cool to see a picture of Gracie and her friends! Hope you all are doing super well!  So the Dodgers choked again in the world series. . . That is just a shame.  Honestly, I was so sad to hear about that.   Dumb Dodgers.

We get to work with so many great people every single day.  This boy, Charles, reminded me of Brik.

Sometimes it can be a little tricky getting to the people we work with. We got flooded!!  Not the best when you are riding bikes. haha

This week with Elder Handy has been amazing. He is a great companion! I would say that the first miracle came from a mother and a daughter, named Patricia and Estefany. Estefany's husband was a cop back in Ecuador, and was sadly shot on Dec. 14. It was a really touching story that that was the day that her life changed incredibly for the worse.  So she moved from Ecuador to the US, and met the missionaries, which was awesome!! She told us at the end of our last lesson they have decided to be baptized on the 14th of December, in memory of her husband, and the day that changed their lives.  It was so touching, and we are so excited for the day that will change her life for the better.

We had a Trunk or Treat, and had 4 investigators there!! We were soooo excited to see the success!! It was so awesome!!

This is a pic of Elder Handy, Hermana Abarca and me at the Halloween party.

A highlight this week was being chased by a pack of kids trying to help us share the gospel.  It was awesome!

Alberto’s baptism.  We are so pumped for him.  Like I said, we get to work with great people.

Spiritual thought: I have been studying "submission" this week.  Christ was the perfect example of submission.  He always makes sure that everyone knows he is doing his Father's will.  In Matthew 19:26 it says that Jesus beheld the multitude and told them that with "man, this is impossible, but with God, all is possible".  There are no better hands to be in. Trust Him!

I hope you all have a great week! I love you all, and keep on keeping on!!!

I know how to cross the border.

Buenas tardes familia y amigos!!

Muy muy buenas tardes!! I hope everything is all super awesome!! I have loved getting all of your emails!! Mom that was so awesome that you got to see Elder Gong!! Crazy that we got to see Elder Holland, and you got to see Elder Gong.  The apostles are everywhere and we are so blessed to have these special witnesses of Jesus Christ.  It is amazing!!  We are so blessed to be a part of this amazing work in trying to grow God's kingdom here on earth. Also. . . . THE DODGERS ARE IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN?!?!?!?! Ok, that is awesome.  Houston was so sad for like 3 days when the Astros lost to Boston.  The Mission Nurse updated me.  She texted me when the Dodger’s won haha, Sister Anderson is the BEST!  Dad, thank you for sending me what happened. I knew Puig would come in clutch at one point.

I know how to cross the border now! Plenty of people have told me how it works.  It is apparently super expensive.  Like ridiculously expensive.  They have to hire a "coyote" to take them across.  Coyotes are pros that help.  It reminds me of the Underground Railroad.  I can't imagine it.

We had a miracle happen on Saturday.  Edith got baptized!! It was amazing, it felt like everything was working against us to keep her from being baptized.  It all started with Elder Johnson taking a spill and having to get an X-Ray on his hand in the morning.  Turns out he has a fracture, and got transferred out because today was the last day of the transfer. He is still in the same ward, but different area, with a car.   Anyways, we then went to the church to go fill the font, got locked out, while it was filling.  Then we had a talk cancel last minute and had to find a backup, and then finally the doors to the font wouldn't open.  Soooo, it was like obstacle after obstacle.  But, she was baptized eventually.  She has so much faith, and I LOVE this family and their love of the gospel.  Super amazing single mom of 5, and I had the blessing of baptizing Edith.

This past week has been pretty hectic to say the least!!  To start off, one of our top investigators, his name was Lorenzo, was progressing like crazy.  We visited him not too long ago, a week after we gave him a Book of Mormon, and asked him how much he had read, he said that he was more than half way through.  Like WHAT!! He had a baptismal date, but a few days ago, we found out he was moving to Florida to work for a few months. . . so now he has moved.  So sad.  Here’s a pic of him!

Now I have a new companion, the one, the only, the Elder HANDYYYYY!! We were planning this from the first day we came out, and never thought it would happen.  BUT IT HAPPENED!! So we are about to just go all out! He is living in Utah, but his parents are from El Salvador so he's fluent. I am so pumped! His mom never let him eat sugar cereal so he’s going bonkers with it out here.  Hilarious!!

Did anyone read Fred and Ted books when they were little?  We loved them. We took this picture in honor of Fred and Ted.  This picture is for Mom!

Temple trip.

Elder Ledezma trained me and I trained Elder Johnson.  Great guys.

I love you all so much!! I hope you all are doing well!  The gospel is so simple, do what you are supposed to do, and look outward.  Act as Christ would!  Christ's gospel will never change, but it will change you!!

Hope you all have an amazing week!!  Go Dodgers!!
