Asian buffet, Pro ball players and baptismal dates!

Buenas tardes Familia, Amigos, Amores,

How are you all doing??  Good to hear that Brik had a great week of ball, and he played well.  Nice to hear the left-handed slinger is back at it again.  Super cool to see that you all went to the A's game! A's vs Angels is always a tough one.  Brik is always dedicated to those LA teams though.  ALSO, someone gave Brik a bobblehead?? That kid gets away with everything!  Seeing Ben wearing his AreaCodes hat cracks me up, because that's what I did every game too! haha.

Pizza and wings below.  Thanks Dad!!!  Elder Perkins and I had a great night that night on exchanges. There’s nothing like a huge pizza showing up at your door at 10pm after a long day of work.

This week was a pretty wild!  Day freaking one of the week, we found 4 new people to teach.  This is not something just normal.  Our mission struggles with finding people to teach.  So that is pretty crazy.  We found Dora and her family.  While we were talking to another person across the way, she yelled at us asking if we were the missionaries.  We said yes, and she said that she needed help, and that she wanted to talk with us for the longest time! So that is awesome! Super pumped with her family!

Here is our district at the Familia Cruz home. Great guys to work with!

Also we extended a date to Glenda again, and she accepted!! We will see where this one will go.  She needs to make a bunch of changes, and wants too, but she has been having a rough time.  I am really hoping to have her become closer to God, because the gospel can SO help her.  I know that it brings families together, and she wants help for her family of 6!  Really hope.

We found an Asian buffet place that is like Panda but UNLIMITED food!  GOLD MINE!!

Most of you all have heard a bit of my story.  Of having the chance to talk to President Guthrie for a long time before my mission, and being able to get to know him.  He was an incredible influence on me, because he told me if there was one thing to do, it was to go on a mission.  Because his mission blessed him a lot, he knew it would bless me.  So long story short, I was fortunate enough to be called to his mission and learn from him even more.  One other person who definitely was an example to me was Taylor Cole.  Taylor Cole played at BYU after turning down 2 offers to play professional out of high school and JC.  He then served a mission in Canada.  After, he came back and played a year for BYU and signed with the Blue Jays.  He made his debut last year, and now he is ending his rookie year with the Angels MLB squad.

I got to talk to him a little bit before everything was set with my mission and other things. All of this happened because of our dads.  At one of Ben's tournaments in Las Vegas, Taylor's younger brother Peyton was playing there as well.  It just so happened that my dad and their dad were sitting next to each other at the tournament. (Obviously not a coincidence!) About 8 months later my Mom was in San Diego with Ben at a baseball tournament.  They randomly ended up sitting next to Taylor’s dad and Peyton at a Marriott eating breakfast not knowing who they were until they struck up a conversation.  Small world, but definitely not another coincidence.  Anyways, Taylor and I had a chance to talk and he told me how much of a blessing a mission was.  He worked super hard through the minors, and now he is in the bigs.  He was in town pitching against the Astros, and he and President Guthrie were friends.

I was spending the day helping to clean up the yard of the nicest lady. (Thanks, Dad, for all those years of “letting” me mow our lawn. She really liked the straight lines that I made.  I told her it was from years and years of practice! In fact if pitching doesn’t work out, then I just might become a major league groundskeeper. haha)   Out of the blue President Guthrie drove up with Taylor in the car.  I was shocked!  We had a chance to talk again and it was so great. It was like a full circle. Being able to meet him in person was awesome because we’d only spoken on the phone.  He is one of the most humble people ever, and very gracious. When I saw him walking up I recognized him, but didn't know where from, but when I found out, gave him a bro hug, and just talked. It was a very cool experience.

I realize how blessed I am to be around the people I am while doing the Lord's work. Through baseball and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we got connected.  I am super grateful to have the time to be around these types of amazingly good, humble disciples of Christ who just so happened to have a great professional career in baseball.  They are both examples to me, and I am blessed to have chances like these.  God knows us all.  He knows the ins and the outs of our lives.  There is a talk in the Oct '99 conference titled "Prophets and Spiritual Mole Crickets". (I know - crazy title.)  It gives a great analogy of how the Lord knows each and every one of us.  All we need to do is follow his commandments and trust him.

I love you all and hope you all have an awesome week! Les amo muchisimo!

Training, chicken and Don de Lenguas!

Buenas mi familia y amigos!!!!

How are y'all doing?? I am so happy to have gotten all of your emails this week.  I really love hearing about all of your lives.  Thank you so much!  I have loved seeing all that is going on!! Hearing about Brik going paintballing was awesome.  Sorry you got nailed with some welts!! Also so cool that an area authority came to visit.  Also, thanks for the package of food!!! Those instant meals are AWESOME!

This week has been a little wild. To be honest, when I found out that I was going to be training, I almost threw up a few times.  I was scared to death.  Still feel like I don't know what I'm doing!  I can’t understand anyone on the phone when they speak Spanish. haha.  But relying on the spirit is the only way.

To kick things off, we learned AND PERFORMED the Haka! hahaha

My new companion is Elder Johnson!  He’s great.  He’s also right out of high school, from California, a super smart guy and his dad is a dentist too! His dad went to U o P dental school right around the same time that Dad was there!  Crazy!

Here’s a picture on his first day!

So this week, the first few days were a little rough.  Trying to roll with the conversations pretty much on my own was hard.  I couldn't follow what was being talked about, and had a rough time responding, but then something happened.  Day 4, it was seriously like a miracle, I would even call it the gift of tongues!  I don't know what happened. It just clicked.  I could talk, I could hear, I could make people laugh.  It was the greatest blessing ever, and I am finding joy in all that we are doing.  We have 20 people that we are teaching, but it is hard to get people to commit, but this week, we found miracles.

We felt like we needed to go try a new complex before we went to visit a member's house.  The majority of the places we knock are all apartment complexes.  So we decided to just go on faith.  We didn't have anyone here that were contacted.  We were knocking around, and no one was answering.  We set a goal to find 2 new people to teach in that complex.  We saw a family standing on the 2nd floor of the apartment complex, so we went to go talk to them.  We talked about Joseph Smith and the power of God being restored to the earth and we set a return appointment.  So then we decided to knock that row of apartments.  So the first door that we knocked, Joshua answered.  He immediately invited us in and said that he had been praying like 30 minutes before we knocked.  He told us he thought it was a sign from God and that He is still there watching out for him. Amazing story and we are going back to teach him of Friday.

Here we are meeting Marco with Obispo Ramos! He just moved from Honduras and was baptized as a kid, wants to come to church!

Had Raising Cane's today!!  Best chicken I have ever had through a drive through.  No joke.  Absolutely heaven breaded and served with dipping sauce.  Heaven. Heaven heaven heaven!!!

Elder Perkins in Wal-Mart, enough said.  haha.

I'd just invite y'all to learn of Christ.  Learn how He works. Study His life, how He teaches, and who He is.  “Hold up your light!” (3 Nefi 18:24)  We are so blessed to have a chance to grow close to Him.

Love you all!! Have a great week!

I had cow stomach soup this week.

Holaaaaa Familiaaaaa!

I had cow stomach soup this week.  I didnt ask until after I ate it. Sometimes you’ve got to put your head down and get it done.  I’m still smiling.

Como estan!  Les amo muchisimo. So great to hear from all of you!! So pumped to see that you all have had such a great short vacation this last week.  I also loved the pictures from the A’s game.  You are so right.  Giancarlo Stanton's cleats are super nice.  Love that they are Vandy colors!  Ancla bajo! (Anchor down!)  I loved going to A's games, so glad to see that you still get those awesome seats!  Mom, thanks for the package!! I did get them and the letter.  I think just the mail is a little slow here. But it did get here!!

I actually really do need my rain jacket!! There is a hurricane coming up the coast of Florida and we might be getting some of the offshoots of the storm.  I am really gonna need it haha. It has poured here a few times.  Even today.

Here’s a shot of our district.  I get to work with so many cool guys.

Soooooo this was a bit of a crazy week to say the least. Kind of sadly, we have hit a few stumbling blocks with a few investigators.  Our golden family, Glenda and Edwin, apparently have been having some troubles in their home.  It has been so sad but we just keep on praying for them.

Elder Handy just said to put in my email that he's awesome.  Here’s a picture of him.  He’s become a great friend of mine.

High note though, as in, super awesome high note! Elder Ledezma and I were literally knocking on so many doors, because one lesson fell through.  We spent like an hour and a half, and literally got nothing.  We were down to one more house, and then we were going to take off, and we knocked this door, and a man opened.  We actually met him a week ago, Franklin.  He invited us in.  AMAZING family.   Special needs daughter that is so sweet, a son that is like 16, and a super nice wife. We are going back to teach them more tomorrow, but the spirit was so strong.  Honestly it was one of those "last door" experiences. Just was such a miracle.

I had to include a pic of me on the bike.  It’s all we do all day.  haha

Here I am in Mod’s Pizza.  It basically  the Blaze for Texas.

Oh.... AND.... so I get this call on Friday night from President Guthrie.  First off, he is the best.  He is such a support to me, and I am so grateful for him and Sister Guthrie.  Sister Guthrie is absolutely amazing.  She encourages and supports us all. I don’t know how she does it. Mom, you would love her.  So President calls and says, "Elder Hansen, I am going to ask something very hard of you, but I want you to know that it is something the Lord has impressed upon me... The Lord wants you to train a new missionary." So that about blew my mind.   I am going to be staying in the same apartment, but I am now a trainer.  6 weeks in, and now a trainer.  It is all going to be faith. I'm freaking out just a little about the training and the language.  My companion is coming straight from the MTC.  I’m super excited and ready for the challenge.

"Faith it ’til you make it."  My new motto. A little twist on the “Fake it ’til you make it.”  Moroni 7:33. "If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me.”  These are the words of Christ.  My challenge is to look at every situation with faith.  If you are doing what you're supposed to be doing, and following what God would want you to do, don't doubt.  Christ promised us we will have the power to do so, if it's His will!

Love you all so much and hope you have a great week!

People actually RUN from me! 😂

Buenos días familia y amigos!!! Como fue su semana?

Hope you all had an awesome week! I love hearing all the updates! You all sound so so good! Thank you for taking the time to write me.  School has started up, so that's pretty great! It started here this past week too! So happy the family is at June Lake camping right now. Lots of really great memories there when I was younger, especially snapping the line of the potential million dollar fish... still bummed. It's exciting to see that Brik caught a monster trout! Love June Lake, hope y'all are having a great time! Also super fun to hear that Ben's phone has been ringing off the hook! September 1 is a big day for a baseball prospect!

So this week has been pretty great! We have had some hilarious experiences stringed together with miracles. First of all, the funniest thing about being a missionary is that some people are actually scared of you. Even though you are always smiling saying have a nice day, people have literally run from us!! Actually often they give us the stink eye first and then run.  It’s totally common!!  haha. Isn’t that hilarious!  I never thought I’d have that happen.   One of the coolest things about Texas is that everyone loves Jesus, especially in the Latino community. So it's easy to talk to people about Jesus. Anyways, we were coming home one night on our bikes, and there is this guy that set up speakers on the corner of a big intersection and was rapping a sermon. Funny thing is we actually know him from biking on the streets, his name is Wisdom. Not a great picture but he is awesome.

Because everyone loves Jesus down here, we talk to a lot of people. We are actually so so blessed here, Elder Ledezma and I work super hard, and fortunately we are teaching like 20 people at the same time. The hard part is that most of the people we teach feel like they're here in the US, so their life is all good and they don't need anything more. Nonetheless, Elder Ledezma and I do have 3 people committed to baptism, with more on the way.

The biggest miracle of the week though came from Samuel. Samuel is from Equatorial Guinea,  aka the one country in Africa that speaks solely Spanish. He has been here for only 2 months. He was referred to us and we couldn't find his door for a full night. Then we felt like knocking one more door, but we decided not to, because we got a feeling to not to. We came back the next morning and found out that he actually lived at that door. Right as we knock, he brings out chairs and has us teach him right there about the restoration and gospel of Jesus Christ. He then shares with us that he had a dream the night before that was the exact same as the first vision. He had a vision of Joseph Smith... So then we give him a Book of Mormon and says wow like 10 times. Said how powerful it was and how he felt about it. We taught him twice that last week, and yesterday he came to church with his cousin Cesar. He then asked when we can come back, and he said he wants to come to church next week too, and come play soccer with the members at the church. He is the BEST!!! It is amazing when I think of the people I’ve been able to  meet in such a short amount of time here. Check out the picture. He and his cousin are way stylin’.

Can I bring up food?  Y’all know how much I love food.  For now, all we eat are flautas.  But I need you to look up pupusas.  They are the most delicious things EVER. Have I told you about them already? The bummer is that we are only able to eat at member’s homes on the weekend for dinner because they talk too much!!  It stinks!  Apparently the missionaries were having a hard time getting out of their homes after dinner to get back to work.  We do have a Krispy Kreme across the street from our apartment.  We treated ourselves one day!

In our area is Astros Stadium and Texans Stadium, but we haven't been to see it because we don't have a car.  Someday I’ll get there!  President Guthrie actually came teaching with Elder Ledezma and me one night.  It was awesome.  He comes out about once a week.  He is always busy, especially now because transfers are coming up.  He just asked if I brought my glove with me today when we visited his office, and I didn’t. I was so bummed.  From now on, whenever I see him I am so bringing it with me!!  ( I can tell my grammar is getting bad from all the Spanish!  Sorry!)

This picture is for Dad.  (“Chamo” is a Venezuelan word for buddy or pal.)

Here are a few things we see every day!  (Mom's gonna love this!) haha

Hope you all are having an AWESOME week! Spiritual thought, I read my missionary scripture Helaman 5:12 today. Remember that the core of who you are needs to be centered in Christ. If he is our rock, we will never fall. Ever. That's a promise!

Love you all!!!!!
